As part of its 125th anniversary celebrations, the landmark Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi Hotel has acquired for its private collection a curated set of 16 signed, limited-edition photographic prints by British photographer Andy Soloman, to be known as The Soloman Metropole Collection.

The exhibition, “Hanoi: Traces of Time” will be exhibited at the hotel from 9th October – 9th December, 2026 and forms part of the ongoing commitment to the cultural heritage of Hanoi by collecting and sharing significant artistic perspectives on Vietnam.

The Soloman Metropole Collection offers a distinctive visual record of everyday life in Hanoi, with photographs spanning streets, markets, schools, factories, and everyday life. Each work is printed on Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre Pearl archival photographic paper, mounted, framed, signed, and individually editioned, underscoring the collection’s importance within the Metropole’s permanent holdings.

As a photographer whose practice is grounded in an intercultural perspective and shaped through collaborative processes, I chose relation as the thread connecting this selection. After studying the collection at Matca, I found many similarities with Sugar Paper, an independent cultural space dedicated to contemporary photography and the photobook that I co-founded in my hometown of Modena, Italy, in 2023. Perhaps both grew from a shared belief in the photobook as a powerful platform for bringing different perspectives into dialogue, while also questioning the established narratives through which we understand the world.

In 2009, battling severe illness and sensing the twilight of his life, Vu Dan Tan embarked on a deeply personal tribute to his father—the illustrious playwright and publisher, Vu Dinh Long. He painted a series of portraits, capturing the visages of the literary icons whose works were once brought to light by his father’s legendary publishing house, Tan Dan.
